this post confuses me... I didnt know Toronto had fire investigators? I thought that was the OFM...

do you mean fire prevention officers who also do investigations?

santacruz05, earlier thus year there was a posting for four investigators. The positions have since been retracted. You are correct about the OFM conducting Toronto investigations.

Any idea why the positions were retracted?

I heard it was a union thing. The union didn't want the investigator's starting at 1st class salary, they wanted them to start off at the probationary salary and the city said no and pulled the plug on the program.

As for the OFM they do some of the investigations in Toronto. The vast majrity of fires in Toronto are not "investigated" per se.

Toronto Fire is hiring Investigators in the next month or so. They apparently came to an agreement to hire 3 From Inside The Department and 3 Externally.

Awesome !

I heard rumour of this as well. Will the investigators be assigned other duties, ie fire inspections when not investigating fires? Or is it likley that they will be operations firefighters seconded to investigations when needed.

I heard it was 2 internally from fire prevention plus a Captain to run it. They're hoping to get 2 externals from the OFM which isn't going to happen. So maybe a couple fpo's from another dept who want to just do investigations.

4 total positions. Association wants all internal. No clarification on whether captain assigned is part of the 4 new positions or an existing captain assigned to investigators. Investigators need to be first class to be considered so starting salary for external may be first class.

It'll be interesting to see how they'll get qualified internal candidates given that they don't do any investigations now.
