Agreed, if it isn't the minute man consider changing to it.
as mentioned ideal for single fire fighter stretch when you want to deploy around obsticals/corners/stairs etc.

what is the purpose of the hose load you have described?

certification is a business. doubtful you will find any cheaper.

getting certified to be hired isn't cheap, but it is an investment.

You can do pleasure craft cert online
and the radio you can write with an examiner after a little self study.

Call the local radio club and I'm sure they can't point you towards a book and examiner.

Most departments will require the 1001 cert, those that don't will either take you as a package for what you have done in life (life experience, trades, post secondary, etc) a few months on a volunteer hall won't help much more than having no experience. It takes years to gain 'experience' don't get...

we climb it at 72 degrees... we wear a ladder belt and clip in if we are working on the ladder. in training and certainly your first time you would have a safety rope so if you fall you are caught. keep your head up. look at where you want to go, and resist the temptation to look through the ladder....
