In Edmonton, we have 27 (28 soon) Stations with quite a few spare and backup rigs of each role. Units are just numbered after their respective stations (Pump 1, Rescue 4, Ladder 5, etc). On the occasion that there's a "BIG" fire there is a backup Ladder, Pump, and Rescue put into service each Labell...

I don't quite remember all the details of this story, but a few years back I remember hearing about a fire crew that transported their patient to the hospital and got in big trouble for it. At the time I believe there were no available EMS units to respond and the pt was a possible MI. So with that ...

I have worked for a few different companies in Alberta, the biggest being IPS and CIP. I have nothing but good things to say about CIP, they've always treated me right and paid me a competitive wage. IPS on the other hand was quite a nightmare.

Just my 2 cents!

Alberta Health Service Question

Hey all, I'm currently in the process of applying to an EMT program. As part of the application I have to do a Student Research Assignment. I haven't had many issues answering most of the questions, but there's one question I just can't find the answer for. "What is the shift schedule for the above ...

How do I get involved in SAR?

Hey everyone, I am currently an EMT working the Alberta oil patch in the area of Swan Hills. I have a great interest in getting involved in a volunteer Search and Rescue group, but I'm not really sure where to start. I figured this would be the best place to start looking for answers. Thanks, Medic9...

PHI is used primarily during contacting STARS, at least where I'm working. Basically I'd call them and let them know the pt condition and PHI and they'll determine if the pt needs air medivac.

Question regarding Prehospital Index

I have a question regarding the pre hospital index scores. If I found a patient who was breathing at 6 resp/min and I gave him a P.H.I score of 5 (under respiratory status) based on my findings, would I change this score to a 0 once I have his airway secured and I am ventilating him at optimal range...
As well in a majority of these oilfield jobs is that the EMR/EMT is responsible for paying their own source deductions (income tax, cpp, ei) the employer leaves that to the individual EMR/EMT.
It all depends on the company. While my current employer does deduct taxes,...

Thanks everyone for the replies! My biggest concern is activating ALS, wether that be ground or stars, because our site is 2 hours from the closest hospital. After that is taken care of and patient is packaged for transport I would have the opportunity to take over primary care. AED would be ideal (...

CPR protocols - Alberta

I work the Oil patch as an EMT in Alberta, I work by myself in a BLS unit on site. My question is regarding an argument that came up between a co-worker and myself. Lets say I get a Cardiac Arrest, I do my ABC's get the airway secured, and my BVM up and running. Is it appropriate to designate my CPR...
