In your Department, are the Health and Safety Officer, Disaster Services Officer, Community Safety Officer and Public Information Officer permanatly staffed positions or are they Firefighters/Officers who move into those positions as and when needed?
Just curious,

These positions are permanently staffed by members who are assigned to fire headquarters. They work days, and are off at night. In most cases there is an on-call member that carries a pager during the night time hours, so should they be required at an incident, they can be paged and requested to attend.North_of_60 wrote:AB,

Typically you will see these members in attendance of any fire that is a second alarm or greater. Health and Safety essentially assists with making sure that firefighters are getting rehabed as needed, that there are proper rehab facilities on scene, and basically that all firefighters on scene are safe and healthy.
Disaster services and Community safety work together with the victims of the fire. Essentially Disaster services will look after finding them alternate living arangements, making sure that they are able to get any important salvageable property or documents out of the house and so on. Community safety will assist to some extent with this, and also is very involved in the community as a part of our "After the Fire" program. Community safety officers will visit homes in the neighborhood where the fire occured to pass along fire safety and prevention information, as well as to answer any questions or concerns that residents may have after wittnessing a large loss fire in their area.
These programs have all worked very well, and we have received a lot of positive feedback from the community.
