One of the finest men I've ever had the priviledge of meeting and working with. You can thank Rob for all the work put forward to have certain types of cancer recognized as Line of duty for Professional Firefighters in BC. Heaven just got a good one. RIP ROB. You'll be missed dearly.

As many of you know Brother Hall was a past Secretary Treasurer of Local 18 as well as the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association. The role he played in advancing the causes of fire fighters across Canada has been evident by the response from fire fighter Union representatives across North America. He was not only a fire fighter and Union leader, but also a personal friend. He is certainly going to be missed.

Rob passed away from one of the seven types of presumptive cancers now covered by WCB.

Fraternally, Rod MacDonald

Vancouver firefighter left cancer rights legacy, mourners hear

Postby spider5 » Wed Sep 05, 2007 7:01 pm

Up to 1,000 firefighters gathered in downtown Vancouver Wednesday for the funeral of Robert Hall, a firefighter who played a key role in getting the province to recognize certain cancers as occupational hazards.

Hundreds turned out for Robert Hall's funeral at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church in downtown Vancouver.

The Vancouver firefighter died of colorectal cancer at age 51 on Aug. 27. As a result of lobbying led by Hall, that disease was among the seven types of cancer listed as occupational hazards for firefighters in legislation introduced by the B.C. government in October 2005.

A crowd of up to 1,000 — nearly all firefighters from across B.C., the rest of Canada and the United States — attended the memorial service Wednesday morning at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church on Nelson Street.

Rod MacDonald, the president of Vancouver Fire Fighters' Union Local 18 and one of Hall's best friends, was among those who praised Hall for leaving a legacy that would benefit other firefighters.

"We have, if you want to call it, comfort in knowing that if we contract this disease, which we're getting more than the general population, that if it turns out to be fatal, our families are taken care of," MacDonald told the mourners.

Before the funeral, fellow firefighters carry out a formal march from Number 7 Fire Hall, where Robert Hall served.
The other cancers recognized as occupational hazards for firefighters were brain cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, ureter cancer and leukemia.

Vancouver Fire Chief Ray Holdgate said Hall deserves to be recognized for fighting tirelessly for firefighters throughout the province.

"What he did during his time as a firefighter is probably more than most of us would do in an entire career, so we're very thankful for that," Holdgate said.

Earlier Wednesday morning, a firefighters muster was carried out at Number 7 Fire Hall on Haro Street, where Hall used to work.

Hall leaves behind a wife and five children.
